Ahh, San Francisco. City by the Bay. Shimmering lights and sourdough bread. Dungeness crab with a side of Rice-a-Roni. Camera-toting tourists crowded onto cable cars. Thankfully, all of that happens on the other side of town. If you don't mind, we'll just stay here in our grimy little 'hood.
Occasionally we do get a little adventurous, though. Here's where we go when we do wander beyond the confines of the Gulch:
Foraging for food:
Brainwash Cafe and Laundromat Julie's Supper Club and Lounge Red's Java House South Beach Cafe Expanding our cultural and educational horizons:

vivid is located at 510 Third Street, Second Floor (NOT the mezzanine!), on the corner of Third and Bryant in the city's South of Market neighborhood. We're within spitting distance of the Bay Bridge, within walking distance of the Embarcadero and Moscone Center, and a short drive from most surrounding communities.
If you're driving in from the East Bay, take Route 80 west across the Bay Bridge (that's towards the big shiny buildings). Stay in (or swerve into) the left lane, and take the Harrison Street exit. You'll loop around a spiral ramp (we like to close our eyes here and pretend we're riding the Teacups at Disneyland) and be rather abruptly spat onto Harrison Street. Turn left on Second, drive for two blocks, then right on Brannan for one block, and finally right on Third. vivid is one block up, at the intersection of Third and Bryant, in the hulking grey building on the left corner (look for our flag flapping up on the roof).
If you're coming from north of the city, take 101 across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Embarcadero/Marina exit (stay in the left lane). Follow Marina (the road alongside the water) and try not to hit the oblivious rollerblading yuppies along the green. Marina winds around and turns into Bay -- take this all the way to the end, at the Embarcadero, and turn right. Take Embarcadero down to Brannan (while admiring the lovely views of the Bay) and turn right. Follow Brannan for several blocks and turn right on Third. vivid is one block up, at the intersection of Third and Bryant.
If you're coming from south of the city (e.g., the airport), take 101 or 280 north. From 101, once you're in the city take the split towards 80/Bay Bridge/Oakland. Take the Fourth/Bryant exit, and follow Bryant for one block to Third. Or, if you prefer, take 280, which ends at Fourth and Berry; follow Berry for one block to Third, turn left, and drive three blocks to Bryant. vivid is on the corner.
Park wherever you can. Metered spaces are available on the street (feed those meters -- they're heavily patroled by the Department of Parking Tickets). Two lots are available between Bryant and Harrison on Third.
