c|net Website Reviews: vivid studios
"where coolness meets company public relations"
(Rating: 4 out of 5)
For a company -- dare I say "corporate" -- site, vivid studios' home on the Web is way cool. Of course, you'd expect no less from the Web design studio that brought you such popular Net hunts as The Rift for Silicon Graphics; Bethany, TX for Microsoft's launch of Windows 95; and Sony New Technologies. With short descriptions and links to past projects and future undertakings, the site does a good job of acquainting you with vivid's work and its company style, and it does so with charming self-effacement. For example, click on the tiny brain icon labeled "grey matter" [now vividians] to get a who's who of vivid's staff, including a bio of the Webmistress who created this site, Drue Miller, and well-known interaction designer and vivid founder, Nathan Shedroff. But the site is much more than a public relations mouthpiece. In "revolution" [now feedback], a threaded discussion group explores such questions as "What are virtual communities?" And in "high octane" [now Form + Function], Shedroff offers insights into interaction design. Accomplishments and philosophy aside, one area of the site that's absolutely not to be missed is the tour of vivid's San Francisco offices and the surrounding Multimedia Gulch. There are some great surprise links here: click on the icon of the lizard or doggie to learn about some of vivid's more unusual staff or, in the larger map of the Gulch, get a look at some of the more popular local hangouts.
