David Marks Senior Engineer In January 1997, David raised his ice scraper above his head and declared "Next year, I will live in a place where there are no ice storms!" Being a man of his word, he moved from Massachusetts to San Francisco later that year. After moving to San Francisco, David served as an Application Engineer for goodcompany.com. He worked to automate the content publishing process using StoryServer. The site offered many challenges, as it employed bleeding-edge personalization, community, and publishing features to a large and active user-base. David joined vivid in June 1998, after we convinced him that we were indeed as crazy as he is (it took a weekend locked in a dumpy motel room with 37 hand puppets and no bathroom breaks, but by golly, we did it). Before the Web, David studied multimedia and graphics programming at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. During his tenure there, he managed to overwork himself by producing a medical tutorial CD-ROM for Blackwell Science (Dr. Chung's Guide to ECG Analysis), teaching a graduate computer science course (CompSci 691 - Multimedia Programming), consulting, and doing programming work for the Center for Knowledge Communication. He designed and implemented instructional tutorials for ARPA, the National Science Foundation, and even worked for a computer game development company (Cyberlore Studios), all while taking programming and engineering classes. So, it's no wonder he seems so relaxed now! Since
joining vivid, David has worked on projects with American
Century, Visa, Webby Awards, and others. He believes that communication,
thorough design, and a strong process are what make a project successful
-- and is constantly researching new tools and methods to facilitate those
core values. David specializes in problem analysis, intelligent application
design, and leading teams of sharp engineers. He is a Linux geek, writes
in UML, and digs Java.
